Gordon Brown has written personal letters to David Cameron, George Osborne and the other targets of a smear campaign devised by one his aides.
The prime minister stopped short of a full apology, instead referring to the allegations as a 'matter of great regret.'
Pressure has been growing throughout the day for Mr Brown to issue a personal apology over 'smeargate'.
